College of Nursing Sciences, Adazi-Nnukwu

Brief History of the College

St. Joseph's Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu was founded in 1938 by the Catholic Archdiocese of Onitsha. As at that time, it was the only medical institution in the old Awka province and beyond. The ideals of the founding fathers were to carry medical care to the hinterlands.

The School of Midwifery started training in 1940 with Grade II Midwifery Training after a visit by the Midwives Board of Nigeria. In February, 1963, the School was re-inspected by Nursing and Midwifery board and upgraded the School to Grade I Midwifery training school. The School ran both Basic and Post Basic Midwifery programmes until 2003 when it opted solely for Basic Midwifery Programme.

With the advent of Reformation of Nursing and Midwifery education and practice in Nigeria, the Proprietor through the help of the then Anambra State Government, rebuilt the school structure to accommodate both Schools of Nursing and Midwifery, creating College of Nursing Sciences, St. Joseph's Hospital, Adazi-Nnukwu, running BNSc degree programmes in affiliation with Nnamdi Azikiwe University (UNIZIK), Awka.
